Question/Answer

Why do Catholics pray the rosary/ pray to Mary?
This is the question that I am sure most Catholics have heard: why do you pray to Mary? The answer: we don’t.
We never pray to Mary as if she is a divine being; we ask for Mary’s intercession. In case you’re still a little unsure, it’s totally biblical. Think to the story of the Wedding at Cana. They went to Mary when they had no wine, and Mary in turn went to Jesus. There is significance here because in the Gospel of John this is Jesus’s first miracle, and it came from the intercession of Mary. The cool thing about the rosary is that even though you are praying the Hail Mary, you are actually meditating on the principle events that took place in the life of Christ. Just think: a mother is invested in her children, and Mary the Mother of God, our Mother, is invested in her son, Jesus, but also us, so when we pray the rosary we are meditating upon the mysteries and events of Jesus’s life through the love and faith of Mary. When we ask for the intercession of Mary, we are affirming the mother/child love and relationship that Mary has with Jesus, but also each one of us.
